Map movement

This page desperately needs some accurate information.

Topics that frequently occur in questions:

  1. Movement of 2 or more hostile armies to the same province
  2. Movement of 2 hostile armies into their opposing provinces
  3. Movement of 3 or more hostile armies
  4. Can armies slip past each other?
  5. Scouts could block hostile movement in Dom3. It was fixed at some point. If you have references please add a note.
  6. Explanations of mixed survivals or flying and how that works.

Movement costs

General mechanics

Movement costs are a property of a province and applied both on entering and leaving a province. A move over multiple provinces pays full price for moving to each intermediary province. Example: province A, B and C are aligned in a line. To move from province A to province C, through province B the costs would be: Leave A Enter B Leave B Enter C

Costs for entering and leaving a province are always identical 1).

Province movement costs

Province Type Cost
Plains 3
Forest 5
Waste 5
Sea 5
Highlands 6
Cave 6
Swamp 7

Additional Modifiers

Modifier Additional cost
Enemy province (unit does not have stealth) +4
Enemy province (unit has stealth) +3
Snow in province (unit does not have snow move) +1
Connection has roads -2
Unit has the appropriate survival ability -2

The movement cost for a province is at least 2.

Mixed survival and non-survival units

If survivals are mixed, aka. A unit with survival under a leader without, or a leader with survival with units without it counts as if none of the units involved had the survival trait. This means that slow units with the survival ability and fast units without - which both could make the trip on their own in one turn just fine - may need 2 turns moving together because the fast units cost the slow units the survival trait and the slow ones bring the fast ones down then.

Army collision

When two armies move into each other (this means army A from province y moves to province z, while army B from province z moves to province y 2)) they will (usually 3)) collide with each other and do battle. The battle will be fought into either province y or z. The mechanics which one is chosen are not fully understood, but are generally assumed to involve which army is bigger and/or has the faster units. The army which originally started in the province where the battle took place will not conclude it's movement this turn and instead stay in said province.

1)
Unless there are roads involved
2)
This only applies when the two provinces are directly adjacent. When both armies are conducting multi-province movement they will pass each other and swap places.
3)
It is sometimes possible for small armies to pass by each other without battle and to swap places. Details are unknown.
