The Arena is a worldwide event where each nation can pit a contestant against the others' in a death match. When the Arena is announced, each nation gets the chance to send a commander, who will then be unavailable for a turn. The following turn, all arena participants fight to death in a series of 1v1 battles.
The winner is rewarded with 100 XP, which can help them enter the Hall of Fame, and one of the following items chosen randomly: Champion's Trident, Champion's Cuirass, Champion's Helmet, Champion's Gladius, Golden Sandals, Champion's Medal, and Champion's Headband. All items are cursed, and will force the winner to participate in the next arena.
There are two types of arena events: Normal arena, and the People's Death Match. In the latter, each participant is forced into a Slave Collar to prevent spellcasting. Arena battles always happen in 0

2 scales. If no-one enters the arena, all provinces lose a candle of dominion.
Retinue items, such as the Bottle of Living Water, are particularly strong in the arena and often the dominant strategy. If spellcasting is allowed, summoning spells are similarly powerful.
A very circumstantial trick is to send the Uttervast or Vastness to the People's Death Match: as they lack miscellaneous item slots, they will be spared their Slave Collars.
However, the arena rewards in the base game are often not powerful enough to warrant any large investment. Moreover, opponents will have plentiful opportunities to counterthug arena winner due to the Champion's equipment forcing them to compete again and again, making further investment a risky proposition.
