Commander

A commander is a creature that is capable of acting independently on the strategic map - in other words, the player can give it orders. This distinguishes commanders from ordinary units, which are incapable of acting independently and will sit in a province's garrison until placed under the leadership of a commander.

Commanders are the primary means through which the player interacts with the world of Dominions and have a huge range of functions. They range from ordinary army leaders who exist to ferry units around, to stealthy scouts who gain vision of lands beyond friendly borders, to priests who bless sacreds and improve morale, to mages who research new magic spells and cast those spells as rituals or in combat.

On battle reports, the names of commanders are indicated in different colours depending on their magical abilities, while ordinary units are written in white font. Note that the battle report colours are based on the base form of the commander and do not take into account paths that were given after creation, such as by making a mundane commander a prophet or empowering a commander into a mage.

  • Mundane commanders with no magic paths have light blue names.
  • Priest commanders with only holy magic paths have light yellow names.
  • Mages with non-holy magic paths have pink names.

Recruitment

Similar to units, commanders require gold, resources, and recruitment points to recruit. Unlike units, they have their own recruitment queue, and the recruitment points for commanders come exclusively from the level of fort built in that province. Provinces without forts have 1 'commander point' available per turn, which is enough to build one of most mundane commanders.

Forts provide 1-2 bonus CP per turn depending on their upgrade level. If a commander requires more CP than is available in a given turn, then CP will be invested over time until enough has been built up to recruit it. For example, a mage requiring 2 CP can be recruited over 2 turns if the province has only 1 CP (e.g. a level 1 basic fort).

Orders

Commanders can be given orders by the player. These can be divided into a few categories:

FIXME Add orders and order types. Maybe create new page for this?
